I suddenly developed nocturnal hypertension.Previously I had been sleeping 10 to 6 without the need for urination. When it started I suddenly started to feel the need to urinate a few hours after going to bed, this was repeated a few times during the night and subsequent nights. Out of curiosity I decided to do a BP test it was alarmingly high.I have found many doctors are totally clueless about nocturnal hypertension and the comment was made many times "well your BP is fine now." during a day time consultation. I have found that sleeping lying flat has no effect on BP during the day but at night roughly between 2200hrs and 600hrs there is an almost immediate effect and lying for a long time at night it continues to rise. The need for urination is a warning sign not to be ignored. I had no other symptoms not out of breath , headache etc just felt a bit odd. Even when put on BP meds there was some but significant improvement but day and night time readings were lower. Got a new doctor he changed the meds to Favotan 5/50 mg which showed some improvement then after looking at the many readings I had taken he prescribed Circadian 2mg a prolonged release melatonin. The first night even though lying prone in bed the improvement was dramatic. I have been on this medication now for 9 days and so far the results have been amazing even when sleeping in bed. I set the alarm 2 or 3 times a night and check BP so far all within normal range though daytime readings are lower than previously but still within the normal range. There seems to be lots of useless suggestions by specialists like cutting back on salt ( my salt levels are right at the bottom of the normal range) and loose weight ( I am 175cm and 58 kg). From my own experience I found sleeping in a chair with feet on the ground, walking about and having toast to eat reduced the blood pressure at night which seems to be in contradiction to accepted of lying down and resting. I found this video after starting melatonin but it seems one of the few to recommend it. Sorry this has been so long but I hope to give as a layman my experience of a medical problem that appears to impact on a high % of the population many not recognising there is a problem other than needing the loo at night.
